In Luke chapter 5 Jesus spends some time teaching a crowd of people from Simon Peter’s boat. Then he says, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Don’t hug the shore. Get out there where the big fish are.
But Peter protested. “We fished all night and we didn’t catch anything.”
I hear myself in Peter’s words.
“I know what I’m doing. I’ve done this before. I know what’s going to happen. It’s going to be just like every other time. We gave it a sincere effort, but it just wasn’t meant to be, and now I’m tired.”
Maybe you’ve said similar things.
But this wasn’t a request. It was an offer. Do you want to catch fish? Do you want to be part of something supernatural? Something you couldn’t have accomplished on your own?
Launch out into the deep.
Sometimes it isn’t a big thing. Make that phone call. Ask that question. Offer a hand. Go out of your way.
Launch. Be purposeful. Active. Bold.
My deep is probably different from yours. But the offer and the One who makes it are the very same.
So what’s it gonna be? Will we launch out?
