Depth of Mercy

By Paula

Depth of mercy! can there be
Mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God His wrath forbear;
And the chief of sinners spare?

I have long withstood His grace;
Long provoked Him to His face;
Would not hear His gracious calls;
Grieved Him by a thousand falls.

Jesus, answer from above;
Is not all Thy nature love?
Wilt Thou not the wrong forget?
Lo, I fall before Thy feet.

Now incline me to repent;
Let me now my fall lament;
Deeply my revolt deplore,
Weep, believe, and sin no more.

Charles Wesley, 1740

Read Romans 3:21-26

(I don’t know that I’ve ever sung this song. In the hymnbook it is sandwiched between two very familiar songs, so I happened to read it when we were singing one of the others. I have long withstood His grace;Long provoked Him to His face; Those were the lines that got me. I like to think I’m a “good” Christian, but I so often need mercy. Thank God for the depth of His mercy.)
