Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
A follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own his Cause?
Or blush to speak his Name?
Sure, I must fight if I would reign;
Increase my Courage, Lord.
I’ll bear the Toil, endure the Pain,
Supported by thy Word.
Isaac Watts, 1724
Read 2 Timothy 2:1-4
(There are at least six verses to this hymn, but I chose these two because of the challenges they present. The questions in the first stanza are easy to answer but more difficult to answer honestly. The commitment in the last stanza is no less convicting. “I’ll bear the Toil, endure the Pain” more often becomes complaining about God apparent abandonment and asking, why me? The reality is, I’m a pretty poor soldier.)
