Lo, He comes with clouds descending,
Once for favored sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending
Swell the triumph of His train:
God appears on earth to reign.
Ev’ry eye shall now behold Him,
Robed in splendor’s majesty;
Those who set at naught and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing, deeply wailing,
Shall the true Messiah see.
Now the Savior, long expected,
See, in solemn pomp appear;
All who have not Him rejected
Now shall meet Him in the air:
See the day of God appear.
Yea, amen, let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne;
Savior, take the pow’r and glory,
Claim the kingdom for Thine own:
Oh, come quickly, oh, come quickly!
Everlasting God, come down.
Charles Wesley, 1758
Read Revelation 6:9-11
(A common cry of the Old Testament believers was, “How long, O Lord?” How long will injustice and oppression continue? How long until You intervene and make things right? How long before You hear our prayers? How long before the Messiah comes? Wesley’s hymn reminds us that as surely as He came before, He will come again in the clouds. Even so, Lord Jesus, come.)
